A Bunch of Amateurs

A comedy about Jefferson Steel (Burt Reynolds), an ageing Hollywood action hero who finds himself out of work. His incompetent LA agent, in a last ditch attempt, finds his client the role of King Lear at Stratford-upon-Avon in the UK. Doesn't sound too bad, does it? But when Jefferson arrives in the UK, he finds that he's instead been booked to tread the boards in the sleepy village Stratford, St John, Suffolk.

Rating: 3 Flicks Review:

Ignore Empire and Ebert, Amateurs received two thumbs up from Phil and Liz no less, after it screened as last year's Royal Command Performance. And in truth that was a fitting place for this dog-eared but shaggily endearing very British trans-Atlantic farce to be shown. For like a Royal Variety Performance, director Cadiff (TV's Spin City) movie is an uneven, sporadically funny evening's entertainment that will appeal more to your mum, dad and granny.

The characters are a bit cartoony, the plot predictable and the whole think a bit twee but there's still something about this theatrical version of Local Hero, scripted by a quartet of writers including Spitting Image duo Ian Hislop and Nick Newman. Reynolds, playing a perfect parody of Sean Connery in his Entrapment years, does a nicely understated turn as a Hollywood prima donna, a tired-looking Charles Durning (Tootsie) plays the worst agent since TV's Ralph Filthy, while a virtually unrecognisable Bond (Pierce Brosnan's Miss Moneypenny) and Staunton (Vera Drake) are straight and solid support.

The delivered-with-a-sledgehammer Lear allegory, over-sugary denouement and sustained attack on tabloid and chequebook journalism don't do the film any favours but memorable moments like an audition montage and turning a mobile library bus to a Hollywood trailer will leave a smile on your face.
