A stylish, martial-arts, vampire, action-thriller based on the cult hit anime series.
Demons have infested Earth and only one warrior stands between the dark and the light: Saya, a half-human, half-vampire samurai who preys on those who feast on human blood. Joining forces with the shadowy society known as the Council, Saya is dispatched to an American military base where an intense series of battles leads her to the deadliest vampire of all. And now after 400 years, Saya's greatest hunt is about to begin.
This isn’t a great movie. But it’s sincere as an entertainment, it looks good, it’s atmospheric, and I will perk up the next time I hear Gianna is in a picture.
Silly and derivative with unconvincing monsters.
Were it not for a last-minute appearance by the action legend Yasuaki Kurata — who, one feels, must have wheel-kicked his way out of the womb — “Blood” would be as pallid as Saya’s alabaster skin.
It's the action that really suffers, the anime's dynamism fizzling out as every samurai duel falls back on fake-looking CG squibs and a blur of fast-cut, see-nothing camera angles.
