In the Land of Blood and Honey

Angelina Jolie makes her directorial debut with this love story set amongst the atrocities of the Bosnian war (1992-1995).

Tells the story of two people from opposite sides of the brutal ethnic conflict: Danijel (Goran Kostić), a soldier fighting for the Serbs, and Ajla (Zana Marjanović), a Bosnian Muslim held captive in the camp he oversees. The pair knew each other before war broke out, but as the armed conflict takes hold their potential romance becomes ambiguous and their allegiances uncertain. In the Land of Blood and Honey also looks at "the consequences that stem from a lack of political will to intervene in a society stricken with conflict."

The film stars local actors and was shot in two versions (one in English, the other in Serbo-Croatian). Controversy surrounded the production, with protests over the subject matter bringing a stop to filming at one stage.
