A surprisingly funny film with plenty of laughs for people young and old. Set in a typical english village with typical english characters this movie will please its viewers (english or not). Rowan Atkinson is great as the minister in the local church preparing for a big Christian convention seeking the assistance of the internet to write his speech. All the characters in this film are well written and well enacted. Patrick Swayze, who chose to dodge the commercial limelight by doing art house films, is brilliant as the sleazy American.
All and all, very entertaining.
A bit silly really. The individual performances were fairly well done but the movie was not believable -- and not funny enough to swallow the unbelievable theme. Quite honestly to make a comedy out of someone who butchers people isn't on and that's why in my view the movie fell flat. And I watched it soon after seeing Mrs Henderson Presents which was an excellent movie in every aspect, one of the best I have seen in a long while. So perhaps I am judging it too harshly.
Keeping Mum is another hilarious comedy from the Pinewood Studios, set in a typical English village where there are dark undertones in the church flower arranging. The bad language come's from the vicars wife, and the violence is so subtle it adds up to a really funny movie.
Mainstream British comedies are notoriously difficult to get right - too often they're simply poor copies of Hollywood pap - which is why Keeping Mum really is something to shout about... Waking Ned meets Serial Mom in the genial and genuinely funny British black comedy ...
Despite a likeable cast and bursts of wit, this fails to work its darker comic themes into its picture of flawed-but-loveable rural Britain. You?d be better off watching The Vicar Of Dibley...
Rather dark, decidedly English and exceedingly well played, "Keeping Mum" is a neatly crafted black comedy with more than a nod in tone toward the Ealing classic "The Ladykillers." Strongly cast, with Kristin Scott Thomas and Maggie Smith both at the top of their game...
