French comedy-drama starring Gérard Depardieu as a bored, one-job, one-town kind of guy who after finally retiring at age 60, pulls out his old motorbike for a roadtrip.
"Laid off from the slaughterhouse at 60, Serge Pilardos (Gérard Depardieu) discovers that to pick up his pension he needs to furnish evidence that he’s been paying taxes. Wife Catherine (Yolande Moreau) bids him to mount his 70s Mammuth motorcycle, hit the road and track down the myriad former employers who never had the big sucker on their books in the first place. The stupendously elephantine, long-haired Depardieu never milks the pathos: there’s a guileless gravity about his deep stupidity that’s insanely touching. The wonderful Moreau complements Depardieu wickedly well as his baleful better half and sharp-eyed champion... There’s a raucous cast of ratbags and nutcases along the road too." Gerard Depardieu draws you in and really makes you feel for his character. This film wasn't what I was expecting but I really enjoyed its quirkiness
I left feeling slightly tampered with. Not one to watch with your Mum.
A quirky road-trip movie with things to say. A return to form for Depardieu too.
The black comedies of Gustave Kervern and Benoît Delépine combine intense Frenchness with a kind of Anglo-American comedy-sensibility, something of Adam McKay or Ricky Gervais. Mammuth is their best yet...
Comprising a string of great visual and situational jokes before it suddenly self-destructs during the final third of its running time, "Mammuth" is a good example of a film that could have been.
Make a note of the names Delépine and de Kervern. That way you can avoid them in future.
Belgian filmmakers Benoît Delépine and Gustave Kervern return with an often surreal road movie, which blends social commentary with deadpan humour.
