Megamind

DreamWorks (Madagascar, Shrek) 3D animated comedy. After super-villain Megamind (Will Ferrell) kills his good-guy nemesis, Metro Man (Brad Pitt), he becomes bored since there is no one left to fight. He creates a new foe, Titan (Jonah Hill), who, instead of using his powers for good, sets out to destroy the world, positioning Megamind to save the day for the first time in his life.

NB: Our reviewer saw the 3D version of this film.

The super-villain is back in business. Hot on the heels of Despicable Me’s Gru comes the blue, bulbous-headed Megamind, wannabe tyrant of Metro City and arch-nemesis of the citizens’ beloved Metroman. Gru and Mega must be related – they’re both a plastic surgeon’s dream, they both think dastardly, and they’re big softies underneath it all.

All serves to highlight that Megamind, whilst a fun watch, is content to follow formula. It isn’t very unique (The Incredibles did superheroes and did it better), but it will play better to a younger, less discerning crowd. Despite a darker tone than one might expect, the humour is too mundane to appeal to adults (the song selections, in particular, are very unimaginative).

But the 3D animation is vibrant and well utilised, a couple of top comedians lend their voices (though Will Ferrell’s just not the same without his face), and the climatic battle is big and loud. Megamind is a moderately amusing experience, if not one of the year’s most memorable animated efforts.
