Director Ridley Scott's upcoming sci-fi thriller set in the same universe as the Alien series, something of a prequel to his 1979 Alien.
Scott has said that story will take place in 2085, about 30 years prior to the events of Alien, before the birth of Ripley. It will feature a female lead, will present a "technologically feasible" view on the early stages of "near faster-than light" travel, and explore the origin of the unknown extraterrestrial race who only had a brief appearance in the first Alien as the derelict spaceship's pilot.
In an interview in early 2011, Scott referred to the film as having evolved into its own "grand mythology and universe", leaving Prometheus' place in the Alien franchise ambiguous.
