In 2007, low-budget Spanish horror [REC] came from nowhere and scared the pants of audiences worldwide. That film centered on a TV news crew trapped in a quarantined apartment building whose tenants are infected with a virus that turns them into homicidal zombies. It's a truly scary film.
The original filmmakers are back with this sequel, taking off shortly after the first film. A medical officer and a Special Officers team (of course, equipped with video cameras), are sent into the quarantined apartment building to control the situation.
One of the brilliant conceits of [REC] 2 is the way it opens – literally 15 minutes before the first movie ends – which sets it up not so much as a sequel but more a continuation of the original story. Set in the same building, fighting the same demonic entities, the story follows a four-man SWAT team and a Ministry of Health official as they uncover the cause and reasons of the demonic viral outbreak.
Although continuing to employ the first-person-perspective, shakey-cam, faux-documentary approach, [REC] 2 focuses more on trying to unveil a back-story of the incidents in the first movie while expanding the sense of danger and dread. The structure mimics the first movie's plot and lovingly recreates the costumes, props and creatures with fine attention to detail. Some very clever sleight-of-hand camera tricks and CGI are implemented to create some shocking violence and scares and the film shows off a brisk pace filled with horror, action and some unintentional humour.
The performances are good and the film plays some clever mind-games with the audience to set the tension level to maximum. There are a few flaws such as the repetitive nature of some action sequences and I would've liked to have had even more back-story, but this is a worthy sequel that should appease fans of horror and of the original film until [REC] 3 is inevitably made.
An above-decent sequel.

This is the real deal forget all that tamed down quarantine crap. Take your Boyfriend or girfriend to this - they will be holding on tight!
A shocking, roller-coaster thrill ride certain to win over anyone who loves to be scared.
A real-time sequel which literally takes off the moment its predecessor ends, [REC]2 keeps the adrenalin pumping while ramping up the good-versus-evil element with an Exorcist-style subplot about demonic possession.
A sequel to the Spanish cult hit that offers an explanation for something that was far more effective when left largely unexplained.
