In the fourth instalment of the Resident Evil series, Milla Jovovich is back in a world ravaged by a viral infection that turns its victims into the Undead.
Alice (Jovovich) continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety. Her deadly battle with the Umbrella Corporation reaches new heights while a new lead promises a safe haven from the Undead: Los Angeles. But when they arrive the city is overrun by thousands of Undead, and Alice and her comrades step into a deadly trap.
NB: Our reviewer saw the 3D version of this film.
We’re four films into the Resident Evil series now and there’s no sign of it slowing down, especially with this latest installment boasting the biggest budget and highest international box office earnings of the franchise to date. I’ll admit to enjoying the first Resident Evil film somewhat, but seriously, what gives? These films aren’t driven by either star power or any semblance of quality and this is no exception. Paul W.S. Anderson has cobbled together another of his nonsensical attempt at high-octane action that fails to stimulate at any level.
Cribbing liberally from other things that he correctly thought looked cool but fails to replicate, here Anderson rips off The Thing, The Descent, and um, The Matrix among others. While he probably thinks he’s paying some kind of fanboy homage, all these moments achieve is a reminder that there are so many other better films you could be watching instead.
Burdened elsewhere by shoddy pacing, acting, dialogue, and most other things held to be quite important attributes of a motion picture, the worst sin Resident Evil: Afterlife commits is to be bloody boring – and no amount of slo-mo 3D backflips are going to change that.

I'm a BIG RE fan, so whilst it was quite predictable that this film was not going to be anything more than a mindless action film, I just had to see it. IMHO the worst film of the series, but as a fan I couldn't help but like it anyway, especially with finally seeing Chris Redfield in action ! But for those who don't really see the appeal in actio or zombie films then I would not recommend this for you.
Part 1 was cool, Part 2 swerved towards stupid and Part 3 made a decent show of a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Part 4 is a lame mishmash of ideas, with ripped off CGI from other movies (Matrix/The Descent), plus gun magazines that never need changing, formulaic plot turns and 'fall guys', then the movie has the gall to swerve towards a fifth attempt??! I won't be watching it.....
great movie the best 1 yet should have won the oscar 4 best movie ever.10/10 i just love zombies they r so cool
I've very much enjoyed the other Resident Evil movies. I was looking forward to this one. It's worth a watch, but is let down by a poor plot and far (I mean totally way too many far) shots designed to show off the fact that this is a 3D movie. I soon got very sick of scene after scene that was clearly just there to be a '3D' moment in the movie. I had to laugh at one scene where the main villain, Wesker is sitting on a throne in his den of evil just waiting for Alice and friends to show up. He makes a great entrance when the moment comes, but I have to wonder how long he had been brooding on his seat waiting for Alice? He must have been sitting there for weeks. Didn't he get bored or need a toilet break? Overall, the movie is fun...but it just isn't up to par with the others in the series.
Does this movie have any nudity or sex scenes? What is the rating?
What fun there is to be had is undermined by drab 3D, hacked-out dialogue and rehashed plots.
Shot in actual 3D rather than being the latest example of the horrible post-shooting conversion process, "Afterlife" undeniably looks terrific.
If you're interested in this movie, it's because you love either seeing zombies explode (check), the video games (major character included, check) or Jovovich kicking undead butt in every conceivable way (check and mate).
This witless installment features the usual ultra-slow-motion mayhem and helpful freeze-frames to allow us to admire the extra dimension. Fans will not be happy, however, to learn that Ms. Jovovich is more decently clothed this time around.
Director Paul W.S. Anderson (who also directed the original) can hardly manage a hint of suspense or excitement. And excitement is exactly what the film ought to have in excess.
