Think sex, drugs and mobility scooters for this Kiwi comedy about Murray (Tony Barry, Goodbye Pork Pie), a former cop who has to go deep undercover inside a retirement village in a last-ditch attempt to nab the one that got away: his ageing criminal nemesis, Frank (John Bach, Madril in Lord of the Rings).
The cast also includes Ilona Rogers (I'm Not Harry Jenson), Elizabeth McRae (Go Girls), Sara Wiseman (The Cult) and Ian Mune (The Insatiable Moon).
Despite the clever idea and the host of talent the film is really a collection of very funny one liners and visual jokes which is entertaining but not all that engaging.
There’s an underlying poignant realism. Small and soft-centred, yes, but not a complete confection.
It has a teaspoon too much treacly whimsy but it is distinguished by a quirky and inventive visual sense and some smart editing, and is an entertaining if not original story idea.
Seeing these well-known, well-worn faces from yesteryear is just one of an abundance of delights to be gained from watching Rest for the Wicked doubtless the country's first rest-home crime comedy.
This is a sweet, rather knowing little movie - hence a very engaging way to spend 75 minutes.
