A sci-fi horror about two genetic engineers (Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley) who secretly conduct their own expreriments, splicing DNA to make new hybrids.
Superstars in their fields, Clive (Brody) and Elsa (Polley) want to take their research up a notch: they want to use human DNA in a hybrid creature that could revolutionize science and medicine. The pharmaceutical company that funds their research forbids it, but they secretly go ahead and the result is Dren: a strange creature that exhibits uncommon intelligence and an array of unexpected physical developments. Dren begins to learn at an accelerated rate and threatens to become their worst nightmare.
Director Vincenzo Natali (Cube) says his take on the Frakenstein myth is "pretty sensational in a lot of ways, but I did co-write the script in consultation with real geneticists and vetted everything with them to make sure it was possible". Executive produced by Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, The Orphanage).
Two romantically involved scientists explore the possibilities of human gene splicing. What they end up creating is a creature both fascinating and frightening. This seemingly modern-day take on Species experiments with a surprisingly fresh set of ideas. The most unique aspect of the film is the tension that slowly grows between the two scientists as they slowly lose their ability to contain the intensely unpredictable creature. Unfortunately, the originality of the premise is dragged down by some ridiculous character arcs and predictably bland horror staples. It’s thrilling nonetheless, preferring to go under your skin as opposed to ripping it open.
Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley give great performances in this sci-fi horror from Italian director Vincenzo Natali, which takes a look at genetic engineering. To some, the story may not make sense, and this may be a little too strange. However, if you get past the strangeness, this is a highly satisfying film.
