Racking up rave reviews and festival awards all over the place, plus an Oscar nomination for Best Feature Documentary, this takes you inside the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina when it ripped through New Orleans in 2005. It focuses on up and coming rapper Kimberly Rivers Roberts and her husband, who were trapped in their attic by the floodwaters but survived to begin a new life. First hand, the horrors of the disaster are revealed and the resentment and disbelief at the slack action of George W. Bush’s government comes into focus.
Filmmakers Tia Lessin and Carl Deal were producers on Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11. Lessin also worked on Bowling For Columbine.
I apologise, we feel bad, but there's no trailer available. ~Ed.
Winner of the Grand Jury prize for documentary at Sundance in 2008, nominated for an Oscar in 2009, this gives us an inside view into the eye of Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath for the residents of the Ninth Ward of New Orleans.
On the upside was the distressing home video footage captured by the lead figure in this doco, Kimberly Roberts. But at times it felt the film was getting a free ride on its subject matter alone. It wasn't particularly well crafted, and tended to repeat information. Political arguments weren't really presented at all, and the audience is asked to accept that the three subjects followed represented all black residents of New Orleans - hard to swallow when one of them is an attention-junkie.
Perhaps I'm being cycnical, because I did get some appreciation of what administrative efforts were needed to sort these poor people out.
