"The story is gripping, and involving, but I didn't quite buy it." Belle has obviously never been to South Africa or lived in it! Some people are never open to the truth - this film is relaity for many people. The setting is real, the violence is real, the cruelty, the sadness it is all real. This film is honest and shows parts of South Africa for what it really is. I tend to agree with the commercialism as it has almost spoilt the film. BUT at least it is opening the eyes of people around the world, showing them the reality of life for people less fortuanate than themsleves.
Tsotsi is deep, sentimental, uplifting yet sad. Slightly glossy american cinematography but you cant hard the harsh reality of the way in which some Africans have to live. A wonderful sountrack accompanies arious scenes. Totally enjoyable.
i don't think it deserved the oscar, and i think the film was trying to be too much... felt the intensity and reality of the violence in South Africa, yet played out like a family movie in parts. Indecisive.
Definitely worth going to, even if a bit mushy in parts. The story of 2 turing points. One when as a yound boy, the central character is driven away from his home by a brutal father and the the world he then inhabits, the 2nd when on being left with the responisbiliy of a baby following a crime he confronts whatever humanity he has left.
Yeah, very blockbuster inspired kind of look to this film, I would agree. And I see some of the press reviews say the films avoids sentimentality, which I don't think it does.
Having said this, the story's power is undeniable. It draws you in and keeps you compelled. You can't take your eyes of Chweneyagae (Tsotsi) - a bundle of mixed up rage & sorrow.
I'd recommend because of this, and also because an African film rarely reaches our cinema screens.
What a simple and yet profound story this is.
With lively pacing, superb performances and a candid yet forgiving heart, Hood has created an inverse fairy tale that is never less than absorbing...
This remarkable movie means to shake you, and boy does it ever...
Emotionally gripping and continually surprising, and it does the great thing - it takes you there, to the heart of somewhere else.
