Apollo 13

Out Now On-Demand

Houston, we have a problem.

Ron Howard’s historical space drama nominated for nine Academy Awards (taking home two) follows the true story of the failed 13th Apollo mission to the moon. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Gary Sinise star as the three astronauts who, in 1970, are set for lunar exploration after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s history-making feat the year before. But what was meant to be a "routine" flight turned very problematic.

Total Film (UK)

Tom Hanks perfectly embodies white bread goodness as mission leader Jim Lovell and, while we may all know the ending, it's a tribute to Howard's no-frills, focused direction that the story remains undeniably gripping.

Variety (USA)

Engrossing account.

New York Times

Playing the tough, commanding Jim Lovell is a substantial stretch for Mr. Hanks, but as usual his seeming ingenuousness overshadows all else about the role.

Empire (UK)

It may not be the best film of the year, but it's certainly made of the right stuff.

Time Out London

Where it scores is in subtly restating traditional notions of male heroism.

A definite feel-good movie.

Chicago Sun-Times (Roger Ebert)

A powerful story, one of the year's best films, told with great clarity and remarkable technical detail.
