Megamind 3D

Out Now On-Demand

DreamWorks (Madagascar, Shrek) 3D animated comedy. After super-villain Megamind (Will Ferrell) kills his good-guy nemesis, Metro Man (Brad Pitt), he becomes bored since there is no one left to fight. He creates a new foe, Titan (Jonah Hill), who, instead of using his powers for good, sets out to destroy the world, positioning Megamind to save the day for the first time in his life.

The super-villain is back in business. Hot on the heels of Despicable Me’s Gru comes the blue, bulbous-headed Megamind, wannabe tyrant of Metro City and arch-nemesis of the citizens’ beloved Metroman. Gru and Mega must be related – they’re both a plastic surgeon’s dream, they both think dastardly, and they’re big softies underneath it all.

All serves to highlight that Megamind, whilst a fun watch, is content to follow formula. It isn’t very unique (The Incredibles did superheroes and did it better), but it will play better to a younger, less discerning crowd. Despite a darker tone than one might expect, the humour is too mundane to appeal to adults (the song selections, in particular, are very unimaginative).

But the 3D animation is vibrant and well utilised, a couple of top comedians lend their voices (though Will Ferrell’s just not the same without his face), and the climatic battle is big and loud. Megamind is a moderately amusing experience, if not one of the year’s most memorable animated efforts.

Chicago Sun-Times (Roger Ebert)

press

An amusing family entertainment and gains some energy from clever dialogue and the fun Will Ferrell has with his character.

Christchurch Press (James Croot)

press

By his own admission, Megamind (Will Ferrell) had a “fairly standard childhood”.

Empire (UK)

press

Like his plans, Megamind verges on greatness but has flaws. But it’s fun, energetic and at times dazzling. Expect a stronger sequel — unlikely to be ‘darker and grittier’, though.

Guardian (UK)

press

Good stuff, up to a point, but nothing like the passion and brilliance of The Incredibles or Toy Story.

Hollywood Reporter

press

Fast-paced but not frantic, goofily good-natured and attractively designed for widescreen 3D.

New York Times

press

Visually Megamind is immaculately sleek and gracefully enhanced by 3-D.

NZ Herald (Francesca Rudkin)

press

A lot of fun, but little heart

Total Film (UK)

Like Monsters Vs. Aliens, a retro-stylised fantasy-satire that balances knowingness with affection, winning kids and olds over in the process. Wry, spry and very funny.

Variety (USA)

This latest DreamWorks toon, while not without its moments of wit and emotion, comes off as a derivative wisecracking machine rather than a feat of sustained imagination.

Definitely one of the Best

The Review compared this movie to Despicable Me I have seen both and see very few similarities Mega Mind was by far a better movie and the 3 D was more advanced a thoroughly enjoyable movie for any age group e.g. take the grandparents and introduce them to 2011 3D and 2011 Cartoon.
