Overboard (2018)

Out Now On-Demand

A riches to rags story. If only he could remember it.

Anna Faris is a mistreated employee who takes revenge on her boss (Eugenio Derbez, How to Be a Latin Lover) in this remake of the 1987 romantic comedy.

Leonardo (Derbez), a selfish, rich playboy from Mexico’s richest family unjustly fires Kate (Faris) and refuses to pay her. Shortly after, Leonardo falls overboard when partying too hard and wakes up on the Oregon coast with amnesia. To get payback, Kate shows up at the hospital and convinces him that they're married.

Suffice it to say, you'd be safer to leave this one floating without a life jacket and just renting the '87 one again.

Hollywood Reporter

Nearly-dead comedy gets some CPR halfway through.

New York Times

None of the proceedings are sidesplittingly funny, but they grow increasingly sweet-natured.

Rolling Stone

Anna Faris and Mexico's biggest star Eugenio Derbez step into Goldie and Kurt's shoes - but they can't keep this gender-reversed reboot from sinking like stone.

TimeOut (New York)

Ultimately pointless, Overboard makes you wonder why it exists at all when it offers neither a fresh angle into modern-day relationships nor an improvement upon its predecessor.

Like the original, the new version is a snarky situational farce that evolves into a cheese-dog fable of home and hearth, and the role reversal lets it feel halfway fresh.

Empire (UK)

Overboard ekes out laughs but fails to add the romance to the comedy. We'd leave this one in the water.

The Guardian

[Faris] could be a big star with the right material, perhaps something with more seriousness and pathos. Overboard isn't it.

Stuff.co.nz (Graeme Tuckett)

A loose-remake that's unlikely to float many people's boat.
