Paranormal Activity

Out Now On-Demand

From first time director Oren Peli, found footage horror Paranormal Activity tracks the story of a young couple who move into what seems like a typical suburban house until they become increasingly disturbed by a presence they experience in the middle of the night.

In the style of The Blair Witch Project, all of the low budget handi-cam footage is presented as if it had been discovered after the fact, shot by the couple as they experience these strange happenings. Shot on a miniscule budget of $15,000, Paranormal Activity went on to gross $193 million worldwide, and inspired equally successful sequels. To date the four films in the series, made for just over $13 million altogether, have earned $714 million.

There are moments in Paranormal Activity when you have to ask yourself why you’re so terrified. This much-hyped, low-budget flick is really no more than a boogeyman thriller. With a budget of just US$15,000, writer-director Oren Peli didn’t even need to invest in a set, shooting the entire thing in his house.

The film’s limited setting means there’s much repetition – your heart rate will literally oscillate as the sun goes up and down. But thanks to its less-is-more filmmaking techniques, Paranormal’s biggest triumph is its ability to ramp up the tension throughout. Much of the time it’s like waiting for an electric shock.

It helps that the two main leads are so easy to watch. Their take-the-piss relationship does plenty to calm the nerves in the lead-up to the scary stuff – comic relief has never been so welcome. Yes, there are a couple of silly bits and you must suspend disbelief to get the full effect, much like its forefather, The Blair Witch Project.

Because the home-footage, cinema verite style has been done before, it’s not as impressive as it might have been ten years ago. But if it’s an old-fashioned fright night you’re after, you won’t be disappointed.

An ingenious little horror film, so well made it's truly scary.

Paranormal" ultimately does deliver in a way that "Blair Witch" never did, but its achingly slow buildup is a test not just of an audience's patience but the power of hype surrounding the latest alternative scary movie.

Peli works at mining the unknown, the unknowable, like a minimalist, using small moments and virtually no special effects exceedingly well.

With a $15,000 budget too puny to empty a petty-cash drawer, the no-frills Paranormal Activity comes packed with thrills.

Beyond the viral ingenuity of the marketing, what's cool about PA is that it's not just a fun thrill ride; it's an instructive artistic experience. A horror-movie revisionist, Peli follows a less-is-more strategy.

Paranormal succeeds in staying unnervingly "real."

"Your'e Scary Movie Reviewer USA"

"Wes Craven- Believe the hype"

"William Friedkin - Succeeds as a true Horror Classic, The Greatest and most well done Horror since Texas chainsaw massacre and The Shining.

" Steven Spielberg - It scared the hell out of me"

Paranomral Activity was way to overhyped in its first release date, my expectations at first were " it's just going to be another Unthrilling Horror".... I was Wrong, this movie was extremeley well done, it looked so realistic as if it was real footage of Paranomal Activity's in your'e home, The cast wer'e great Unknown actors, this made the movie even more realistic. Paranomal starts off slow, and then builds up slowly to a terrifying last 20 minutes.

I rank the Movie a 4 1/2 out of 5 and consider it to be

"The scariest Movie You will ever see on Big Screen excluding The Exorcist" bloody-disgusting

from camera shake -had to close my eyes. Tedious overall - a good idea, well executed but far too drawn out.

Good, but come to it cold

If you've seen the trailer and read the reviews you're just going to sit there waiting for each bit you already know about to occur. However, it's a skilful bit of film making and I believe that if you saw it and knew nothing of what to expect, it'd deliver a real punch. The marketing of Paranormal Activity has been successful in getting bums on cinema seats but has ultimately ruined the movie. Shame. Looking forward to Oren Peli's next movie. He's going to be a great director.

Soooooo slow to start, takes ages to get to the part where you jump out of your seat. There are some REALLY CREEPY moments, but overall, I wasted nearly $20 and 1 1/2 hours of my life.

The trailer to this movie and the scary parts you see in the trailer....THATS IT!!! Those are the scary bits, if you want creepy and scary then watch "House of a 1000 corpses" Bummed out by this movie, all HYPE!!

Good Movie

Paranormal Activity is a cool movie but not that scary. Of course I don't believe in ghosts and didn't go to be scared. I went to enjoy it and have my own opinion, yet most of the audience was probably going for a pretty good scare and it sounded to me like they got one. So for me it wasn't scary but i still thought it was a very good film.
