To dance is to hear our hearts speak.

Ballet epic co-directed by French dancer/choreographer Angelin Preljocaj, starring Anastasia Shevtsova and Juliette Binoche.

Trained from an early age by rigorous perfectionist Professor Bojinski, Polina (Shevtsova) is a promising dancer. She is just about to join the prestigious Bolshoi Ballet when she discovers contemporary dance, which throws everything into question on a profound level. Polina decides to leave ballet behind and moves to France to work with famous choreographer Liria Elsaj (Binoche), but despite her determination and obsessive work ethic, Polina just can't seem to break through...

...a somewhat obliquely and messily told story of the particular growing pains of a dancer that lacks a clear enough emotional throughline that could serve as a narrative backbone.

Diverting, but not essential viewing.
