Soul Boy

Out Now On-Demand

British coming-of-age drama set in the 1970s Northern Soul underground music scene.

Amidst power cuts, strikes and boot-boy aggro on the football terraces, Joe (Martin Compston, Sweet Sixteen), is bored of a life that’s going nowhere. Enter hair-dresser Jane (Nichola Burley, StreetDance) – blonde, brassy, and moving to the beat of a whole new world of sound, movement and all-nighter dancing at The Wigan Casino – the home of Northern Soul. Meanwhile Mandy (Felicity Jones, Cemetery Junction), an artist, is hot for Joe and eager to help him become the cool 'soul boy' he wants to be.

The film, made on a shoestring, is a little rough around the edges, yet driven by such a genuine love of its milieu and the period texture (pasty complexions, Gola bags, rare vinyl) that you find yourself cheering it along. The music, most of it imported from black America, is superb.

Marcus gets the retro look just right, while the score is predictably fab, but sadly it all amounts to not very much.
