War drama from writer-director David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) starring Brad Pitt as a rock star U.S. general bent on winning in Afghanistan
An anti-establishment, pro-soldier exploration in the form of an absurdist war story of a born leader’s ultra-confident march right into the dark heart of folly. At the story’s core is Brad Pitt’s sly take on a successful, charismatic four-star general who leapt in like a rock star to command NATO forces in Afghanistan, only to be taken down by his own hubris and a journalist’s no-holds-barred exposé.
Based on the real-life fall from grace of Afghanistan commander General Stanley A. McChrystal, who retired from his command shortly after an embarrassing profile published in Rolling Stone depicted him mocking civilian government officials. Despite not being quoted directly as critical of President Obama, comments from his staff suggested McChrystal's disappointment with his Commander-in-chief, further making his position untenable.
